About

Guy & Dennis Van Rompaey

Originating from:

Belgium

Hello, we are Guy and Dennis Van Rompaey, two brothers who run a horticultural company together since 2005. We grow vine tomatoes as our main product. We have inherited the interest for horticulture from home. Our parents grew tomatoes themselves, so it was not surprising that we chose this job. In our search for added value for our product, we decided in 2007 to produce something special in addition to ordinary vine tomatoes: innovative products with a nice shape and a striking colour. By diversifying, you can create added value. With this motto, we decided in 2010 to plant kiwi berries on a piece of land behind the greenhouse. Through talking to colleagues, we came into contact with this unique product. We attended many courses to gain more insight into the cultivation and harvesting process. Thanks to the open-air plantation and the time of harvesting, the kiwiberry is an interesting sideline crop for our company. In September, the cultivation of tomatoes becomes a little quieter, which frees up time for the kiwiberry. The kiwiberry can be grown outside because the plants are very frost-resistant. Only from the moment the buds sprout can they no longer withstand the frost. Work on the kiwiberry plants starts at the end of April/beginning of May. From then on, every week half a day is set aside for pruning the plants. The kiwiberries are harvested in the open during the months of September and October. We have chosen 3 different varieties: Geneva, Weiki and Kokuwa; this in order to achieve harvest dispersion. In 2012 we were able to harvest our kiwi plants for the first time. Bon appetit!
