Belgium

Hello, I am Eddy Baeke, a kiwi grower since 2008. Besides my career as an executive in a large multinational, I have always remained a farmer in a secondary occupation. When the sugar factory in Moerbeke closed down and we said goodbye to the sugar beet quota, we joined the kiwiberry project to try out this new crop on the vacant land. We mainly grow sugar beets, wheat and threshing corn and, since 2008, kiwiberries. Winter wheat and corn are much less labor intensive, so the combination of the different crops is going well. We were looking for a niche in fruit farming. At a fruit grower's meeting, I first heard about the kiwi berry and then contacted Filip Debersaques of Hogeschool Gent. Until now, pruning and tethering was the biggest work, in addition to planting and installing water supplies. The kiwi berries are marketed through Coöperatie Hoogstraten, the ideal marketing and sales channel for niche specialty fruits. In my spare time, I like to take tours with vintage tractors.
