Hello, I am Eddy Baeke, a kiwi farmer since 2008. Alongside my career as an executive in a large multinational, I have always remained a farmer as a sideline. When the sugar factory in Moerbeke closed and we said goodbye to the beet qoutum, we joined the kiwi fruit project to try out this new crop on the freed up area. We grow mainly sugar beets, wheat and threshing maize and since 2008 also kiwi berries. Winter wheat and corn are much less labor intensive, so the combination of the different crops is going well. We were looking for a niche in fruit farming. At a fruit growers' meeting, I first heard about the kiwi berry and then contacted Filip Debersaques of Hogeschool Gent. Until now, pruning and tethering were the biggest work, in addition to establishing the plantation and installing water facilities. The kiwi grapes are marketed through Coöperatie Hoogstraten, the ideal marketing and sales channel for niche specialty fruits. In my spare time, I like to take rides on vintage tractors.
