About

Nico van Berkel

Originating from:

Netherlands

We would like to introduce you to Nico van Berkel, a kiwiberry grower for Hoogstraten since 2011. As with many of our growers, his interest in the profession was passed down from father to son. In the distant past, Nico started with the cultivation of strawberries and, via the cultivation of freesias, spray carnations and roses, has now returned to the cultivation of small fruit. He has found a new passion in the kiwiberry. Nico came into contact with this unique product through an article, and his old greenhouse could be used perfectly for its cultivation. What initially started as a hobby has now far exceeded this level. From 2010, the kiwiberries, mainly Issai, were planted in phases. The last planting dates from February 2013. The plants are carefully pruned both in winter and summer, the grass is mowed 3 times a week and the berry harvest starts in the months of August and September. Nico consciously chooses to supply a high-quality product. He only uses the supply in the special kiwiberry packaging. Growing for Hoogstraten means selling a beautiful product in an honest way at a good price for him. According to Nico, an auction where the auction clock is central is a real auction. They no longer have that type of auction in the Netherlands, which is why Nico chose Coöperatie Hoogstraten. Enjoy your meal!
