About

Nico van Berkel

Originating from:

Netherlands

We would like to introduce you to Nico van Berkel, kiwiberry grower for Hoogstraten since 2011. Just like with many of our growers, the interest for the trade was passed on from father to son. In the distant past Nico started out growing strawberries, and via the cultivation of freesias, spray carnations and roses, he has now returned to the cultivation of berries. He has found a new passion in the kiwiberry. Through an article Nico came into contact with this unique product and his old greenhouse could be perfectly used for its cultivation. What started as a hobby has now far exceeded this level. Since 2010, the kiwiberries, mainly Issai, have been planted in phases. The last planting dates from February 2013. The plants are carefully pruned both in winter and summer, the grass is cut three times a week and the berry harvest starts in August and September. Nico consciously chooses to supply a good quality product. He only uses the supply in the special kiwiberry packaging. To him, growing for Hoogstraten means selling a beautiful product in an honest way at a good price. According to Nico, an auction with an auction clock is a real auction. In the Netherlands, this type of auction is not known (anymore), which is why Nico has chosen for Coöperatie Hoogstraten. Enjoy!
